  • La Grange sophomore standout Dwodney Thompson.
La Grange sophomore standout Dwodney Thompson.

Sophomore Dwodney Thompson had a huge game Friday to lead the Leps past Caldwell. He had kickoff returns for touchdowns of 95 and 90 yards and also had a key interception.

“Dwodney came up at the start of district last year as a freshman but never had a freshman mentality. He went up there and attacked it, and right away proved himself as a varsity-caliber player,” said La Grange head coach Kyle Cooper. “We put him wherever we need him. He does a great job as a receiver, great job with yards after catch, and on defense we throw him in there in our third and long packages, and he got that big interception last week.”

We’re proud to honor Dwodney Thompson as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

Here’s our interview with him:

You may have the most unique first name on the team Dwodney. Is there a story why you were named that?

“My dad is also named that so I was named after him.”

Why do you think you’ve been so good at returning kicks?

“Our coaches scheme it up pretty good for us.”

You got moved up to varsity as a freshman last year.

What was that like?

“It was blessing to be called up and have such an impact on the team.”

Y’all play Giddings this week. It’s one of the oldest rivalries in the state, with these two teams playing one another more than 100 times over the years. Describe that rivalry.

“It’s always going to be a physical game. It always goes back and forth. Hopefully we can get the win this week.”

You had a go-ahead kick return for a touchdown last year against Giddings. What do you remember about that score?

“In the huddle we were down, coach called the play, and I was ready for it.”

What’s the best thing they serve in the La Grange cafeteria?

“Cheese sticks, but they rarely serve them.”

What’s the worst?

“The tacos.”

Halloween is Thursday. What’s a memorable Halloween costume you wore?

“One time I dressed up as a Power Ranger – the blue one.”

What’s the best Halloween candy?

“Twix”

Do you have any nicknames? What are the stories behind them?

“My nickname is ‘D-Ray.’ It’s the first letter of my first name, and then my middle name is Ray.”

You’ve had some family members that played for the Leopards. Can you tell us about those family connections?

“My brothers played and then I had a sister who played basketball and softball. I really learned a lot from them and aspire to be like them. Daven McKenzie and Deshawn Villanueva (were standout football players for the Leps) and I also have a younger brother.”

If you were an opposing coach, after what you’ve done the last couple of years, would you kick the ball to Dwodney Thompson?

“No sir, I would not. I would kick it away.”
