Strong Opening Statements

La Grange, Schulenburg and RTC All Win Playoff Opening Games

Leps Beat Sealy 7-2

The La Grange baseball team started the playoffs strong with a 7-2 victory over Sealy in Game 1 of their Bidistrict best-of-three series Wednesday at Rice Consolidated.

Tristin Ulrich pitched 5.1 innings of two-run ball, striking out 11.

The Leps also drew seven walks.

Game 2 of the series was set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Weimar Vets Park. Game 3, if necessary, would be at 7 p.m. Saturday in Mumford.

Wednesday’s victory was the fourth in a row for the suddenly surging Leps (1510) and comes on the heels of Monday’s 5-3 playoff tiebreaker win over Giddings.

That victory earned the Leps the No. 1 small school playoff seed out of District 22-4A.

“The kids really wanted to win, they battled hard and did a lot of good things,” said La Grange head coach James Zaruba of Monday’s victory.

In that game, Gillum, Klesel, Hunter Gross and Ulrich combined on the pitching effort.

Dalton Janacek had two hits and two RBIs including a homer. Ulrich, Jonah Ehler, and Howard Holmes also had hits for the Leps in that game.

Now these young Leps (which only have one senior Oliver Gunn), are one win, away from the area round of the playoffs.

“We graduated seven seniors from last year so we had to fill a lot of positions,” Zaruba said. “We gave kids opportunities, and we rolled with it. It’s been fun developing these kids over the year.”
