Sports Banquet Summary Thoughts from Coach O’Neal
Editor’s Note: O’Neal asked if we could share these words to LHS athletes as another school year ends:
I’ve experienced a lot of firsts this year stepping into this community- one of them being my first All-Sports Banquet at La Grange. And what a setting it was. It reminded me of something important: none of the accolades we celebrated that night were achieved alone. Every honor and achievement represented the player, teammates, parents, coaches, teachers, and a community that chose to invest in something bigger than themselves.
To our seniors and your families - what’s ahead will be full of firsts. And while that can feel uncertain, it’s nothing you aren’t prepared for. Athletics has already trained you for it. You’ve taken leaps of faith, pushed through adversity, and competed without always knowing how things would turn out. That doesn’t stop now - it just becomes even more important.
But here’s the tension I want to leave you with - and really, all of us. We can’t fall into the trap of “there.”
“When I get there… then life will be better. When I graduate… When I become a senior… Then I’ll have arrived. Then I can relax.”
The truth is, “there” doesn’t exist. It’s a moving target. And if we’re not careful, we miss what’s right in front of us because we’re chasing something that was never meant to satisfy us.
So as this school year comes to a close, yes- rest. But not just FROM what you’ve done. Rest FOR what’s next. Be renewed with purpose.
Because faith moves you forward - it produces action. It steps into the unknown anyway.
Fear does the opposite it convinces you to wait, to hesitate, to sit still.
So my prayer for you seniors is - step forward in faith. To the underclassmen - your turn is coming faster than you think. Continue to strive, to grow, and to invest in the people around you.
Just like that night reminded me - you were never meant to do this alone. And you will never have to.
