The Schulenburg Shorthorns shut out the Kenedy Lions 49-0 in their first game of district play Friday night. Forty-two of those points came in the first half alone.

“I was very pleased,” Shorthorn head coach Luke Hobbs told reporters after the game. “I liked the energy we had. I liked the focus we had. I’m sure we’ll see some bad things on the film. But right now it feels great.”

Shorthorn running back Da’Terrion Houston had three rushing touchdowns. Jayse Janda caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Aaron Janecek. Janecek threw for another touchdown to Byron Johnson, a 49-yarder.

Janecek threw for perfection Friday night, completing seven of seven passes for 169 yards. The Shorthorns rushed for 305 yards utilizing nine different ball carriers.

Mason Kunschick led the Horns in rushing with 124 yards on 11 carries. Most of that came in the second half.

Kenedy managed only four first downs and 74 total yards of offense. They punted the ball seven times.

“Our defense is playing awesome,” Hobbs said. “Over the headset, you can hear our defensive coaches basically calling their plays out before they happened.

We had their number. Our guys played technique very well. A lot of times on defense, it’s hard to tell because one guy gets a tackle, but another guy played technique so very well that it funneled (the ball carrier) to the tackle. That’s what I saw a lot of tonight.”

Leading 42-0 at halftime, Schulenburg was able to play mostly backups in the second half.

“A lot of them aren’t second-teamers per se, they’re just playing in different positions,” Hobbs said. “We don’t have a million kids. So a lot of guys got to play some new positions. We got some carries to a few new guys. I just liked the effort they gave. We maintained the line of scrimmage with new guys in there. I thought our running backs played well.”

Tavondrick “Coodie” Ellison put on a spectacular performance at running back in the second half. He had four memorable rushes for 31 yards and a touchdown. The powerful yet nimble Ellison would have scored another touchdown on a 52 yard carry in the third quarter, but the play was called back on a holding penalty against the Horns.

“Don’t encourage Coodie like that,” Hobbs joked after the game. “He begs me every day for the ball. He auditioned very well. But he does a dang good job at defensive end and he plays tight end. He can move. He is an athlete. That was really awesome. I was happy for him.”

Schulenburg faces their archrival, the Weimar Wildcats, this Friday in Weimar. The Wildcats are coming off a bye week with a full roster after some of their players missed action the previous game.

“It’s going to be a battle,” Hobbs said. “Weimar has played a very tough nondistrict schedule. They’ve had guys in and out of their roster … They’ve got really good athletes. They’re physical. I think it’s going to be a four-quarter slugfest, honestly. I think it’s going to be a great game.”
