The Schulenburg Shorthorns won their first game of the season at home against the Sacred Heart Indians of Hallettsville 35-0. Schulenburg dominated the game defensively, holding the Indians to just 129 yards. Shorthorn Senior quarterback Aaron Janecek threw for 98 yards and ran for 110.

Schulenburg and Sacred Heart honored their former head coach, David Husmann, during the game Friday night. He died in 2020, but has coached both teams during his illustrious career, which included leading the Shorthorns to a pair of state titles.

Current Schulenburg head coach Luke Hobbs said the Horns showed a lot of promise but need to improve on offense.

“We had a lot of penalty yards,” Hobbs said. “I don’t know if it was first game jitters. But we had a lot of penalty yards and they happened in the exact same spot. We gotta get better. I’m sure when we watch film I’m sure there will be legitimate calls. We just gotta fix it.”

The Indians stopped the Horns three times on downs.

Hobbs said he was pleased with the offensive line’s performance Friday night, especially with two starters out to injury. Sophomore Ian Reeves stepped up to play center after Adam Thompson suffered an injury in the scrimmage last week.

“We don’t have any subs and they never came out,” Hobbs said. “We made some adjustments to our blocking scheme at halftime and that really opened up the game in the second half.”

Several Shorthorns came out briefly during the game due to cramps “The cramps were my fault,” Hobbs said. “We didn’t run this week because we had flooded fields. So we went in the gym and went through the motions. I didn’t condition them enough, and that’s my fault.

Shorthorn running back Datterion Houston showed his ability as a playmaker Friday night. He broke open several big running plays and scored twice. Mason Kunschick and Owen Brenek also scored on runs. Schulenburg’s special teams showed a big improvement over last year.

“Coach (Brad) Oden is coaching special teams, and he is phenomenal,” Hobbs said. “We’re putting more starters on special teams. We practice special teams 25-30 minutes a day. Brycen Schramek was pin-point, deadly accurate with his kicks today. He put them exactly where they were supposed to go and our coverage team was awesome. I’m very pleased with special teams.”

Schulenburg will face a tough opponent in 3A Div. 2 Rogers this Friday. The Eagles went three rounds deep in the playoffs last year. But they lost to Groesbeck last week 56-42.
