RTC Girls Beat Fayetteville

In a game that had all the intensity of a playoff matchup, the Round Top-Carmine girls beat Fayetteville Friday 3426.
The victory for the Cubettes all but assures they will win the District 29-1A title with two weeks left in the regular season. Friday’s victory improves RTC to 7-1 in district, while Fayetteville is still going to playoff bound, but is now 5-2 and in second place.
“We just persevered,” said Cubettes head coach Caitie Weishuhn. “The first half was just really bad basketball from RTC, but we just stuck with it. These girls don’t like to lose.
“When they wear RTC on their chests they are not going down without a fight.”
That first half was a flurry of tenacious defense and missed shots for both teams and the score was just 10-10 going into halftime.
With a strong third quarter RTC led 25-15 going into the fourth quarter, but Fayetteville went on a 9-1 run in the final period. A Maycee Miller layup with just over three minutes left in the game cut the RTC lead to just 28-26 but the Lady Lions could get no closer.
Late buckets by Brooklyn Gold and Madison Markwardt kept RTC ahead to stay.
“This is a great rivalry game,” Weishuhn said. “It doesn’t matter how good or bad one team is from year to year, it’s always a dog fight and it’s fun.”
Tess Eilers led the Cubettes in scoring with 13 points.
Devynn Moeckel led Fayetteville with seven points.
“Our girls played hard,” said Fayetteville head coach Marcus Sodek. “They have come a long way from the beginning of the year. We’re mostly freshmen and sophomores. We’d had some growing pains. Round Top played a heck of a game.
“I thought two things that lost us the game were missing free throws and missing too many close shots right at the basket.”
