RT-C Freshman Markwardt Tallies a Triple-Double in First Varsity Match

Talk about a debut.

Madison Markwardt, a Round Top-Carmine freshman playing in her first varsity match last week, had a triple double (16 kills, 19 digs, and 17 assists) in the Cubettes’ season-opening volleyball victory over Anderson-Shiro last week. She continued that success for the Cubettes as they surged to the title of the Copper Bracket at the Columbus Tournament last week, and then in their win Tuesday over Giddings.

“She’s already made a huge impact on our team, not only physically, but she’s been a leader on the court verbally as well,’’ said RT-C head coach Caitie Weishuhn. “She plays a lot of ball, club ball, so she’s used to playing at a higher level – and she’s killing it.”

Markwardt is an easy selection as this week’s Fayette County Record Athlete of the Week.

1. What were your emotions as you played in that first varsity match?

“In the first varsity match I was nervous at first and eager to play. But then with my teammates around me I was excited with every point we made.”

2. Did you surprise your-

self with how quickly you excelled at the varsity level?

“I did surprise myself because with the nerves I was thinking I would shank a ball or miss a serve but when things started to flow I got loose and just started to have fun with it.”

3. How have the older players on the team made your transition to high school easier?

“They’ve made it so much easier by being there when I have questions.”

4. What were the most memorable parts of your summer break?

“Going on vacation with my family (Port Aransas) or when I went to Florida in the AAU tournament with my club team, TexStar. (They placed first in one of the upper level brackets).”

5. Did you watch the Olympics? What were your favorite sports to watch? “I watched volleyball, of course, and a few track and field events.”

6. What other activities do you plan to do in high school this year? “ I plan to do cross country, basketball, continue with volleyball, track and hopefully my mom will let me do tennis.”

7. What do you want to be when

you grow up?

“ Something in the health or medical field, something helping people.”

8. What is your favorite movie?

“Anything scary, but my favorite is “The Conjuring.”

9. Who is your funniest teammate?

“Tess (Eilers) or Jessi (Rohde). When Tess or I do something wrong we just find a way to laugh about it. Jessi and I at the net are always chatting about the most random things.”

11. Round Top-Carmine was one win away from going to state last year. What are your goals for yourself and this team this season?

“This year I hope make it all the way to state, and it would be nice to win it all, but just getting there would be a great thing to do.”
