With the song “We are the champions” blaring over the loudspeakers, the members of the La Grange boys basketball team each took a turn climbing up a ladder and cutting down a piece of the net at Lep Gym Friday after their 46-25 win over Giddings.

It was a celebration for winning the district title for the second consecutive season.

The Leps more than won this district title - they dominated.

Friday’s victoty clinches the District 22-4A title with a week and a half left in the season.

Winners of 15 in a row, the Leps have surged undefeated through all 10 of their district games.

“This means a lot,” said senior Thai Scott, of the district title. “We’ve been working hard all season. We didn’t know if we were going to be able to come together to do this, but we did.”

Friday the Leps looked a dominant as they have all season, using a relentless defense to limit Giddings to just 12 points through the first three quarters.

Offensively Nate Scott led the way for La Grange with 15 points, as chants of “All-State Nate” showered down on him every time he scored from a loud LHS student section.

Cordale Knapik scored 10 as the Leps improved their overall record to 24-8.

“After football season was over we came in and worked hard,” said Leps senior Jeremiah Dillard. “We like one another, we have fun and have a great time. Winning district means everything. We’ve worked on this day in and day out, but we have more to do.”

La Grange returns to action Tuesday at Manor New Tech before closing out the regular season Feb. 13 at home against Smithville.

“So we’ve accomplished this goal of a district title but that’s the first step. Going undefeated in district is the next step,” head coach Trent Collier said. “We know we’re the one seed, we know we’re the champs. We feel like we have a shot against those Houston teams (in the opening round of the playoffs) ... We’ve had a successful year but it’s not time to be satisfied.”
