With their 14th win in a row, the La Grange boys basketball team has put themselves within one win of a second consecutive district title.

The Leps dominated the visiting Austin Achieve Polar Bears Tuesday, winning 6733. The La Grange boys were led in scoring by Nate Scott, who had 15 points. Reece Nygren added 10.

“In the first half we played good defense, got a little loose in the second half,” La Grange head coach Trent Collier said. “It was a good game, we did what we had to do.”

The Leps remain a confident, but hungry bunch as they have improved their record to 23-8 overall and 9-0 in district.

“They have a swagger but they really want to go undefeated in district. It’s a desire they have,” Collier said.

Tuesday’s victory puts the Leps on the brink of a district title with three games left in the regular season.

“It would mean a lot to win district,” Nygren said. “It would show winning district is the norm around here.”

Nygren said a big key to their current win streak is chemistry.

“We’re playing loose, fun. It’s a great group of guys, we have fun in the locker room and on the court,” Nygren said.

“Fourteen wins is a lot but we are shooting for more, obviously.”

While a district title appears likely for the Leps, what looms beyond is a tough task indeed.

In the first round of the playoffs the Leps will face a still-to-be determined team from the ultra competitive District 21-4A of Houston ISD schools.

“We have some strengths as a team but we have to start limiting turnovers. We have a chance to play with those Houston schools but only if we take better care of the basketball,” Collier said. “They know that hurdle is ahead of us, but we just have to stay focused on what is directly in front of us.”

And right now that’s the visiting Buffaloes Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
