Lady Leps Win Playoff Opener; Set New Program Record for Wins
In the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs on Thursday at Hutto Memorial Stadium, the La Grange Lady Leps Varsity Soccer secured a 2-0 win over a formidable Waco Robinson Lady Rockets team.
With the victory, the Lady Leps have won 16 of their last 19 games, marking a new program record for success in a single season.
On Thursday, the Lady Leps (16-5-2) relied on a blend of defensive discipline and opportunistic scoring to defeat the Lady Rockets. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Leps found its opening to score when senior Kaylee Soto threaded a ball forward to freshman Lily Banks, who found the back of the net. Moments later, the Lady Leps struck again when senior Miriam Lopez initiated a passing sequence to freshman Raylee Gutierrez, whose pass ricocheted off a Robinson defender and into the path of Banks, who buried her second goal of the night to secure the 2-0 cushion. While the offense provided the lead, the defense ensured it held. Senior goalkeeper Hope Michalke earned the clean sheet, backed by a total team defensive effort for the full 80 minutes.
The Lady Leps now turn their attention to the Columbia Lady Necks in the area round of the UIL playoffs. Kickoff is 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24th at Eddie Joseph Memorial Stadium (Wharton).
The La Grange boys soccer team did not have the same success in their playoff opener as the Lady Leps.
In the second half of that doubleheader in Hutto Thursday, the Leps lost to Waco La Vega 7-2.
Quade Brothers and Aldo Hernandez scored the only two goals for the Leps, and Hernandez also had an assist.
The loss ends the Leps season with a 14-9 record.
Waco La Vega improved to 22-2 with the win and advances to play Almeta Crawford in the second round.
