District play starts for the La Grange girls basketball team Friday.

And gosh, do they look ready.

The Lady Leps dominated El Campo Tuesday 69-25 in a game that was probably even more lopsided than that final score indicated.

“El Campo’s been plagued by injuries and it’s been tough for them this season, but we played well,” La Grange head coach Heath Golan said. “Our motto this year has been ‘fast and furious,’ and we had a little slow start tonight, but the end of the first quarter and into the second we were living by that motto.”

La Grange’s relentless pressure defense and ability to run the floor on offense led to a lot of easy buckets for the Lady Leps.

Landri Hernandez, who had missed the entire Brazos Tournament last week with an injury returned at full-strength Tuesday scoring a team-high 21 points.

“I was really ready to come back out. It’s hard to watch from the bench. You want to be out there helping your team,” Hernandez said.

“It was good to see her have that type of game,” Golan said. “When she was out some of our other girls gained some experience, so I feel better about our depth.”

Freshman Campbell Cooper added 17 for La Grange which improved their record to 9-5 overall.

Kylie Trlicek scored 12. And now they head into Friday’s 7:30 p.m. district opener against Smithville with a full head of steam.

“Smithville will be a battle,” Golan said. “We’ve played some common opponents this season and the scores have been similar. They are definitely improved from last year.”

But La Grange looks ready and they have had a great extended run of hoops success, placing either first or second in district each of the last four seasons.

Golan said Taylor, last year’s defending district champ, may again be the team to beat in 22-4A.

“I think the key for us is to lock in and take it one game at a time,” Hernandez said. “We’re ready for district. I think we’ll do well.”
