What a week it was for the La Grange girls basketball team.

Wednesday they went to Smithville and handed the first place Lady Tigers their first district loss.

Friday the La Grange girls hosted Bellville and doubled the Brahmanettes’ scoring output, winning 77-36.

“We had a big fourth quarter against Smithville and that’s what happened tonight in the second half,” La Grange head coach Heath Golan said. “We got steals. We got turnovers, and that’s our style. We get easy shots that way.”

The Lady Leps are quickly turning into a very dangerous second half team.

“I think we see what other teams are doing and are just able to adjust,” said La Grange senior Kaylee Holmes. “We are just playing really well right now. We’re getting stronger as a team and having better chemistry.”

Kylie Trlicek led the Lady Leps in scoring Friday with 19 points. Campbell Cooper scored 16 and Macie Collier had 12.

Now 21-10 overall and 5-2 in district, the Lady Leps have officially clinched a playoff berth.

The Lady Leps have not missed the playoffs since Golan took over the girls program in the 2017-2018 season.

“They were making the playoffs before then too, but we’ve just had a good run of girls come through,” Golan said. “They have some talent and are coachable. We try to tell them, you don’t have to be a basketball player. If you are an athlete and can run, we can put you in the spots to be successful.”

The Lady Leps are just one game behind Smithville and Navasota, which are tied for first in the standings. There are three games left in the regular season for the Lady Leps, starting Tuesday at Giddings.
