The La Grange volleyball team has not had the hottest start to the season.

But they looked like they put a lot of their previous struggles behind them in a sweep over Lockhart at home Tuesday.

The Lady Leps surged to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-19 victory over the Lady Lions.

The win improves the Lady Leps’ overall record to 3-7.

“It’s been a rough start, yes, but I think we are slowly going to put it together,” said La Grange head coach Leslie Coltrain.

Carley Ulrich led the Lady Leps in kills with 15. Avery Griffin had eight and freshman Brion Williams had seven.

Williams also had 11 digs, three aces and three blocks.

“There’s no denying Brion has a fantastic night all the way around,” Coltrain said. “She’s a freshman, and that’s fun. That’s a lot a fun. She’s getting more comfortable every time she steps on the floor.”

Williams said her teammates have been key to making her have such a successful, and quick, adjustment to the varsity level.

“At the beginning I was kind of nervous but they helped me get to where I am now,” Williams said. “We’ve really worked in practice on the things we’ve needed to improve on.”

Coltrain said that unlike in some of their earlier losses this season, Tuesday her Lady Leps passed the ball well.

“Serve receive has been our downfall so far this season, and I thought we cleaned that up a lot tonight,” Coltrain said.

Another freshman, Ashtyn Smith, led the Lady Leps in digs with 19.

Clara Bundick had 20 assists and Hope Michalke had 10 as the Lady Leps played without their returning district setter of the year Kylie Trlicek, who was injured in the tournament over the weekend and will be out at least another week Coltrain said.

Ulrich had three aces and Kenna Lamza had two blocks.

Now 10 matches into the season Coltrain, said she’s learned something important about her 2024 Lady Leps.

“I have some girls who are gritty,” Coltrain said.

The Lady Leps play at the Bastrop Tournament later this week.
