can spark a fire.

The La Grange girls basketball team started district play with a one-point loss to Smithville, but the Lady Leps have been on fire since, winning two in a row, including Friday’s 79-32 demolition of Giddings “After that loss to Smithville we wanted to send a message that we are still here and ready to play,” said La Grange senior Landri Hernandez, who scored nine Friday.

The Lady Leps, who improved to 18-9 overall and 2-1 in district with the win Friday, were led in scoring by junior Kylie Trlicek, who had 28 points and sophomore Campbell Cooper added 17.

“I thought our energy defensively was better than it’s been and that led us to getting scores on offense,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan. “Our pressure game gave

See halftime and we came out and did what we had to do,” Mathis said. “We were taking charges, getting on the ground for the ball, making plays all over the court.”

Coach Collier wasn’t worried by that halftime deficit.

“We were getting good looks, they just weren’t falling,” Collier said. “Giddings was playing a great game, but I still felt like we were in control. We came out in the second half and just kept doing what we were doing.”

La Grange was led in scoring by Conner Brooks and Cordale Knapik, who each scored 10. Devonte McKenzie and Clayton Cooper each scored eight and Mathis and Oliver Gunn each had seven.

Brandon Burgdorf led Giddings with 18 points.

Friday’s victory made for an extra happy birthday for the Leps’ head coach, who got sung happy birthday by the crowd before the game.

“When the players found out it was my birthday they were telling me, ‘we’re going to get you a win.’” Collier said.

Now the Leps, who have a 15-8 overall record and a 1-0 mark in district turn their attention to Caldwell, where they play Tuesday in another district contest.
