No matter how good your 2024 has started, it hasn’t been as good as the new year for the La Grange girls basketball team.

The Lady Leps began 2024 with a 34-point win over Caldwell Tuesday, but that was just a warm-up for Friday’s 76-3 win over Austin Achieve.

And no that’s not a misprint. La Grange won by 73 points Friday as everyone on the roster scored.

There wasn’t a JV game Friday so several underclassmen were called up to varsity and saw significant minutes in the blowout win, and they all got on the scoreboard too.

“Not being in school and in a routine (because of the holiday break), you never know what you’re going to get on a given night,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan. “I just wanted to play well and build some confidence, going into our game with Giddings next week. We knew this could get out of hand, so we didn’t want to play sloppy. We just wanted to do the little things, take care of the ball and we did that for the most part.”

La Grange sophomore Kylie Trlicek led the way for the Lady Leps with 17. Freshman Macie Collier added 14.

“Feels really good to be part of a team like this and to be contributing,” said Collier, who is the daughter of new La Grange head boys basketball coach Trent Collier. “My first game on varsity was really nerve-wracking. I was all over the place. But it’s gotten better. We’re growing together as a team.”

Tori Harold and Hannah Gross each scored seven for the Lady Leps Friday.

As the Lady Leps continue their playoff chase, do they have a team-wide New Year’s Resolution?

“I think it would be just taking care of the ball,” Golan said. “Turnovers are going to happen, but if we can eliminate the silly ones and keep our defensive intensity we can ride that into the second half of district play and into the playoffs.”

Friday’s victory improves the Lady Leps’ overall record to 13-9 and their district mark to 3-1 as they prepare to play at Giddings at 6 p.m. Tuesday night.
