The Taylor girls came to La Grange and all but mathematically clinched the district basketball title Tuesday with a 52-38 win over the second place Lady Leps.

The victory vaults the Lady Ducks to 9-0 in district while La Grange fell to 6-2 in district and 16-10 overall.

Facing the relentless pressure of a very athletic Taylor team, La Grange (which is down to just eight varsity players because of injures) fought hard but it was not enough.

“They are just a really good team, but we did our best against them,” said La Grange’s Kaylee Holmes, who scored eight. “Against pressure like that, you just have to try to stay calm and not rush things.”

Campbell Cooper led La Grange in scoring with 15. Kylie Trlicek scored nine and Tori Harold scored six.

“I thought we competed well, our effort was very good,” La Grange head coach Heath Golan said. “They are just so long and athletic and it’s relentless pressure the whole time. You never get a break. It takes a toll, and we have a lot of girls playing a lot of minutes.”

Despite Tuesday’s loss the Lady Leps still are very much in the driver’s seat for the runner- up spot in District 22-4A.

“With all the injuries we’ve had and the youth we’ve played with this season, a district championship would have been great, but playing through what we have, I’m pleased with what we’ve done,” Golan said.

La Grange plays at Caldwell Friday and would officially clinch a playoff spot with a victory.
