Henri Vincik has played a huge role in the Flatonia baseball team winning its first district title since 2009, their 23-4 overall record and their current march to the third round of the baseball playoffs.

“Henri has really stepped up through the season, batting in the 4, 5 or 6 hole and has really established himself in the 4 spot right now,” said Flatonia head coach Shawn Bruns. “He’s come through with a lot of big hits. When he’s had the opportunity to drive in runs, he’s come through for us. I hope that continues. Being a junior, he’s played a lot of ball... really stepped up in the outfield. He hasn’t pitched that much this season but he’s ready if we need him more in the playoffs.

“He’s a great kid, lost his stepdad a while back and I think he’s really stepped up for his family, his mom and his siblings, a top-notch kid, One of those kids you want your son to be like.”

We’re proud to honor Vincik as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

Here’s our interview with him:

You have a unique spelling of your first name. Is there a story behind that?

“My mom, her favorite TV show was MASH, and there’s a character on there named Henry, and my mom’s name is Sandi, with an ‘I’. So she took the ‘I’ from her name and Henry from the TV show and made my name.”

How exciting was that playoff series against Port Aransas (which Flatonia swept last week 8-4 and an extra-inning 6-5 victory)?

“It was really exciting, a lot of energy, great atmosphere, what a playoff game feels like.”

What will be the key for your team to do well in the next round against Kenedy (a best of three series in Wimberley Thursday Friday, and if needed, Saturday)?

“Utilize our pitching staff the best we can, and make the plays that count. Little things add together.”

Besides baseball what other activities are you involved in here in Flatonia?

“Interact Club, and I also play football and track.”

What is the best kind of sandwich?

“PB and J”

What would be your at bat walk up song?

“Follow God” by Kanye West

What would be your dream career?

“Landscape”

Your teammate Titan Targac is one of the best high school pitchers in the state and headed to play for Texas A&M after high school. What has he taught you about pitching?

“Just do what you can, don’t do anything special.”

What’s your favorite movie?

“Talledega Nights”

Your head coach Shawn Bruns has so many wins and multiple state titles to his credit. Tell me about him.

“He’s meticulous. He likes everything just right, planned out. He likes to be on a time schedule. Eveything at practice is on a time limit, he has a schedule for everything. He always wants everything perfect.”

You have the blonde hair there (dyed along with the rest of the team). What’s been the reaction?

“Everyone did it the week after we beat Shiner (to win the district). Everyone loves it. It gives good energy.”
