Sophomore Lainey Gromaski is a powerful hitter for the Fayetteville volleyball team which swept North Zulch in the first round of the playoffs Monday. She’s the team leader in kills with 220 and added more to her total Monday.

“She started last year as a front row only player for us,” said Fayetteville head coach Clint Jaeger. “She didn’t serve for us last year and this year she’s really become a more consistent server. She’s really stepped up in all-phases of her game.”

Gromaski and the Lady Lions play in the second round of the playoffs Friday.

We’re proud to honor her as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week. Here’s our interview with her:

What stuck out to you about your team’s performance in the playoff opener Monday?

“Everyone wanted to make sure we go far, so we were just like, let’s get this over so we can go further into the playoff season.”

Who is your funniest teammate and why?

“I think we are all pretty funny, but on the court I’d say Devynn Moeckel.”

Which teammate is the loudest during matches?

“Emily Keilers – in a good way.”

What is your favorite subject in school?

“English or history/geography” If you were in charge of changing the Fayetteville mascot from Lions to something else, what would you pick?

“That’s a hard one. I don’t think I’d change it.”

What do you want to be when you grow up?

“I would love to be a marine biologist”

If you could have dinner with three famous people who would you pick?

Madison Skinner (UT volleyball player), Taylor Swift and Nina Moorer (Texas State volleyball player)

It’s November. Thanksgiving is coming up. Of all the traditional Thanksgiving foods, what’s the best?

“The Turkey”

What’s the worst?

“Sweet potatoes”

If you could magically add a new business to downtown Fayetteville, what would you add?

“I’d add a movie theater.”

It was just three years ago that Fayetteville won the state volleyball title. Did you go to that match? What do you remember about it?

“I did go to that match. I guess I was in seventh grade. I remember the good energy the competitiveness, everyone was there to play their best and win.”

What will be the key to making a long playoff run for your team this year?

“Courage, determination and a go-get ‘em attitude.”
