La Grange vs. Madisonville

When: 6 p.m. Thursday Where: Bryan’s Merrill Green Stadium Records: La Grange is 3-7. Madisonville is 8-2.

Of Note: The Leps reward for making the postseason as the third place finisher in their district is to match up with District 13-4A runner-up Madisonville, a team led by junior quarterback Ty Williams, who completed 67-percent of his passes and is averaging more than 200 yards a game through the air. The Mustangs also rush for 180 yards a game and their only losses have come to Columbus and Waco Connally ... La Grange had lost three in a row. They are led by junior quarterback Clayton Cooper who has thrown for 1,609 yards this season. Junior running back LaKayvion Broussard has run for 739.

Last meeting: Madisonville defeated La Grange 41-21 in the first round of the playoffs last season. Then sophomore quarterback Ty Williams threw for 265 yards and five touchdowns last season. La Grange’s C.J. Davis returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a TD pass from Bear Meng. Bravion Rogers also ran for a touchdown.

Schulenburg vs. Johnson City

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Shelton Stadium, Buda ISD Records: Schulenburg is 5-5. Johnson City is 8-2.

Of Note: One year after they went 0-10, the Shorthorns make their return to the postseason under first year head coach Luke Hobbs. They face a Johnson City team that was only two points away from being a district champ. They lost to undefeated Mason 28-27 back on Oct. 13. Johnson City’s only other loss came in a 56-42 game to Thrall back on Sept. 1 . Schulenburg just beat Thrall on the regular season finale 42-35 last week as quarterback Aaron Janecek had another monster game running for 193 yards and two touchdowns and throwing for 131 yards and two more scores. Rodney Walton also ran for two touchdowns last week for the Shorthorns.

Last meeting: You’ve got to go all the way back to 2013 to find that last time these two teams played one another. In a regular season matchup that season Schulenburg won 37-0 as Damien Houston ran for three touchdowns amidst a season the Shorthorns went 8-4.
