Flatonia Headed to Regional Finals
The Flatonia Bulldog baseball team defeated the Johnson City Eagles 2-0 in a great high school pitchers’ duel Saturday. This victory claimed a Regional Semifinal championship for Flatonia.
Both teams’ pitchers pitched great ballgames.
For Flatonia, Titan Targac pitched a one-hit shut out, while giving up three walks and had ten K’s. McCray Jacobs for Johnson City gave up two runs on two hits, and had two walks and ten K’s.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Nathan Aguillon walked with two outs and promptly stole second base. He then followed with an attempt to also steal third base. The throw from the Eagle catcher sailed into left field, which allowed Aguillon to score the first run for Flatonia.
Flatonia would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Beck Zimmerman led off the inning with his second single of the night. A successful sacrifice bunt by Cale Janecka moved Zimmerman to second base.
Targac followed with a hard hit ground ball to short and the shortstop preceded to make a low throw to first that the first baseman couldn’t handle. This allowed Zimmerman to score from third to make the final score 2-0.
Zimmerman picked up the only two hits for the Bulldogs.
Flatonia now advances to the Class 2A Region IV Regional Final vs. the Ganado Indians. The Indians are a District 29-2A opponent of the Bulldogs.
Flatonia was the District 29-2A champion, but lost twice to Ganado in district play. Those two losses were the only losses that the Bulldogs had in district.
Ganado finished tied for second in district play with Shiner with three losses. In a tiebreaker for playoff seeding, they lost to Shiner. In the Regional Quarterfinal round two weeks ago, Ganado defeated Shiner two games to one in a best of three series. This Regional Final series between Flatonia and Ganado will be played on a date and at a site TBD on Monday morning.
