Fayetteville Runs Past RTC
The state-ranked Fayetteville Lions basketball team is “starting to hit our stride,” according to head coach Jake Diggs.
And that’s a very dangerous thing for anybody who has to play the Lions.
Friday’s opponent was Round Top-Carmine, and Fayetteville beat the Cubs 7419 as the Lions improved to 17-8 overall and 6-0 in district.
RTC fell to 5-16 overall and 1-5 with the loss.
Fayetteville was led Friday by Easton Jaeger, who scored 17. Jack Schley added 12 and Mason Fenhaus scored 11.
“They can do it all,” said Round Top-Carmine head coach Brock Marburger after facing the Lions Friday. “They play good defense. They pressure you. They force you into turnovers. They rebound the ball really well, get out in transition, and then in transition they can nail threes or get to the basket. They are a complete team. They do everything well and that have a lot of depth. They can go 7,8.9 players deep and not lose anything. Hats off to them.”
But the Cubs didn’t back down from the challenge.
William Neese led RTC See with six points. Tre’Veon Fisher scored five and Facundo Cerda four.
“I’m proud of our boys. It’s easy to look up at the scoreboard and give up but I thought we competed and did what we could against a really great team,” Marburger said. “We are young, lots of freshman and sophomores getting playing time and still learning. We had a tough stretch when we lost some close games but the boys have battled and that’s all I can ask for.”
Meanwhile, Fayetteville is working for another long playoff run. Last year the Lions made it back to the state basketball tournament for the first time in 81 years. They graduated a trio of big guys from last year’s team, but are still rolling.
“It all goes back to effort,” Diggs said. “Our kids are putting in a lot of work after school. You come around here late at night you’ll see cars up here at the old gym putting up shots.
“We’re going to keep working and see where we can go.”
