Cambree Denham had a big day Monday at the District 29-1A track meet in Fayetteville.

She won gold in the pole vault, the high jump, the 200 meters and as part of the district champion 4x100 relay.

She also broke her own school records in the pole vault (9-feet) and the high jump (5foot-2 inches) Monday.

“Cambree is a really hard worker and dedicated to everything she does,” said Fayetteville track coach Mitch Madden. “Last year she made it to state in high jump and pole vault and both events were going on at the same time and that was really hard for a freshman. She did a great job, was close to medaling on both events. She’s an all-around great athlete and great individual.”

“She’s a kid you can count on,” said Fayetteville track coach Chuck Seaver. “When’s it’s time, it’s game-time for her. You can count on her giving everything she’s got.”

We’re proud to honor Cambree Denham as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

Here’s our interview with her:

What’s your favorite track event and your least favorite?

“The high jump is my favorite, just the experience of jumping, building up more and more, is so fulfilling.

“My least favorite is the mile for sure. I tried cross country and that didn’t work out.”

You broke school records in the high jump and the pole vault. How proud are you of that accomplishment?

“I was very proud ... I was in awe, did this just happen?”

You made it to state last year as a freshmen in the pole vault and the high jump. What was that experience like?

“It was difficult actually. Both events were going on at the same time. One of the workers took me from event to event after each jump, and I was just going back and forth the entire time. I did learn that I need to balance both of them more and practice more.”

Especially in those field events there’s usually a lot of time to think between jumps. How do you fill that time to stay calm and focused?

“I just visualized myself clearing the bar and try to stay calm and focused and I just try to regain my energy.”

What’s your favorite memory at a track meet?

“At regionals last year, when I broke more of my school records and when I found out I was going to state.”

I understand you are cousins with one of Fayette County’s most famous track athletes, Baylor University’s Austen Diggs. Tell me about that and what you’ve learned from him?

“I’ve learned so much from him, how to stay confident, how to train. He’s such an inspiration to me.”

What other activities are you involved in at school?

“I’m involved in volleyball and basketball as well.”

What’s your favorite movie?

“It would have to be a Disney movie, probably ‘Tangled.’”

What’s your favorite food?

“Pizza.”

What is your favorite class in school this year and why?

“My floral class. I really enjoy working with flowers.”

What is something most people don’t know about you?

“I’ve moved a bunch in my lifetime and I’ve found Fayetteville has given me the best opportunities over other schools I’ve been to.”

What do you want to be when you grow up?

“A florist.”
