Alyssa Liccioni, is a senior star for the La Grange softball team. As a pitcher, she leads the team in innings pitched, strikeouts and ERA. At the plate she’s hitting .329 and knocked a inside-the-park home run in last week’s playoff opener.

“Alyssa has been a big part of our success,” said La Grange softball coach Robert Young. “Considering who we lost from last year and how our season started a lot of people didn’t expect us to be where we are now, but we’ve been able to do it because of a lot of hard work from players like Alyssa.”

Liccioni and the Lady Leps play in the second round of the playoffs this week against Salado.

We’re proud to honor her as this week’s Fayette County Athlete of the Week.

Here’s our interview with her:

How badly does the pronunciation of your last name (It’s La-Shaw-Ni) get butchered?

“Definitely more often than it should. I get a lot of different pronunciations, a lot of Italian ones.”

How many different

pitches do you throw?

“I throw a fastball, change, drop, screw, rise and curve – so six.”

What is your best pitch?

“I’d definitely say my curve. It has the most movement and spin and it’s pretty consistent so I throw it a lot.”

You hit an inside the park home run in the playoff opener last week. Talk about that play.

“With those kind of pitchers we were facing you just have to wait for your pitch and drive it.”

What’s your favorite memory of high school softball?

“I’d say our overnight tournament last year in Llano. It was just a big bonding experience for me and my teammates and it was super fun to spend the night with them and play with them for multiple days.”

When you pitch to your teammates, who is the hardest to get out?

“I’d say Haylie Cooper mainly because she’s a lefty and she slaps, and she has a pretty high batting average.”

Who is your silliest teammate and why?

“Definitely Sarah Kay because we’ve been friends for so long and have the same sense of humour.”

In addition to softball, you’ve also done track and cheerleading in your high school career. What’s the hardest sport and why?

“Softball involves a lot of athletic ability but also a big part of it is mental.”

If you were giving the speech at graduation, what advice would you give your fellow graduates?

“I’d say to just leave it all on the field, give it your all and just enjoy it.”

Talk about your plans for after high school.

“I’m going to Texas A&M- Corpus Christi to study business and accounting.”
