Youngsters Learn Financial Literacy on Trip
Kindergarten students at La Grange Elementary went on a field trip to National Bank and Trust on Tuesday, March 19, for the bank’s annual Penny Pincher program.
The staff at NBT taught the students about money and the banking industry. The kids learned about savings and checking accounts, loans and safety deposit boxes.
“We teach financial literacy to these kindergarteners to give them a foundation of what money is, what banks are for, how to save, what loans are about, how to cash a check and what the vaults are for,” said NBT’s Sandy Hooper. “It plants that seed in their mind. A lot of the parents of these kids bank here. So they’ve been in a bank before. Now they’re getting an idea of what transpires when their parents come in.”
Hooper said the Penny Pincher program continues throughout the school year with bank staff visiting the school for periodic lessons about money and banking.
