William Anzalone, one of Texas’ most iconic artists, has an exhibit of new paintings opening on Saturday, March 2, from 4-7 p.m., at the Red & White Gallery in Fayetteville.

The master landscape artist’s new works are based on the area around his studio/ home near Round Top, where his late wife built a garden when they first moved to the area. The extended series of oil paintings entitled “Louise’s Legacy” explores the everchanging light patterns created by a foliage-engulfed garden gate. Anzalone’s mastery of composition and color elevate the landscape form and leads us to see beyond the obvious.

Anzalone’s work has long been celebrated for capturing the feeling of the Texas landscape, while changing in style and palette over the years. His works in oil on canvas and pastels on paper are featured in numerous private, corporate, and public collections. Anzalone’s work has been exhibited in key galleries and museums, including The Museum of Fine Art in Houston, positioning him as a significant figure in postwar and contemporary art.

Anzalone’s reputation as a master painter was gained over his 60 years of representation by Meredith Long & Co., one of Houston’s largest fine art dealers before it closed after the founder’s death. His annual shows there lead to art patrons all over Houston owning his work. For the past ten years the Red & White Gallery in Fayetteville has shown the artist’s new and legacy works.

Now at 88, Anzalone still paints nearly eight hours a day, and is consumed by the pressure he places on himself to create meaningful expressions of art. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1935, he brings a rich educational background to his work with a B.A., M.A., and the Rotch Prize in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and studies in architectural design at Pratt Institute. When Anzalone moved to Houston in 1959, he lectured at the University of Houston, eventually becoming a full Professor there before retiring from teaching in 1993. Today his admiring students still show up at his exbibits to see his ever-evolving work.

The public is invited to come see Anzalone’s latest paintings and to meet the artist at his opening this Saturday, March 2, from 4-7 p.m. at the Red & White Gallery. (His work can be viewed online now at www.redandwhitegalleryonline. com.) In addition to Anzalone’s new work, the second gallery at the Red & White will have a large selection of his early pieces, including works in oil, graphite, gouache, and pastels.
