Texas Independence Day Celebrated in Round Top

The Town of Round Top celebrated Texas Independence Day on March 2 with a literal “bang.” The recently-formed Round Top Cannoneer Corps fired the town’s historic cannon on the courthouse square that morning. Pictured at left are Round Top Mayor Mark Massey with the Cannoner Corps: (from left) Barry Bone, Glenn Morris, Massey, Jerry Hinkel and Ken Ripper. Mayor Massey also delivered a speech about Round Top’s early days during the Republic of Texas. About three dozen people attended the event. The cannon will be fired again on United States Independence Day during the annual Round Top July 4 Parade and Celebration.
