Carmine Heritage Society
The Carmine Heritage Society met March 5 in the Carmine Museum to discuss “Toys and Activities enjoyed by children 1900-1950, and before television.”
Children used their imaginations by taking common items and pretending they were something else. Handkerchiefs could be used to make a cradle holding two babies. Sticks became guns; longer sticks a stick horse; rocks as cows and horses; and etc.
They played house, school, and doctor and made houses in the woods using sticks just placed on the ground for rooms. Other games were Chase, Tag, and Hide & Seek. Rules were made up as the game was being played.
Group games included Farmer in the Dell; London Bridge; Croquet; A Tisket a Tasket; Red Rover; Fox Across the River; Wave Me out the Calaboose; Stink Base; Drop the Handkerchief; and Dodge Ball.
Safety was not a concern as swing seats were made out of wooden boards. There were Giant Strides, Merry Go Rounds, and long See Saws.
Other games played were Marbles, Jacks, Pick-Up-Sticks, Yo Yo’s, String Games with your fingers, Baseball, Potato in a Spoon races, and Three-legged races using croker sacks made from burlap that feed came in.
There were Jigsaw Puzzles, Checkers, Uncle Wiggly and other Board Games, Card Games, Dominoes, Embroidery work, and homemade Dolls. Paper was folded to make hats, boats, airplanes, and other imaginable things.
Before electricity, there was no TV or radio, so children and their parents made up games for entertainment. What can you think of?
