St. Rose Students Tour Holocaust Museum

The St. Rose of Lima Catholic School 8th grade class recently took a field trip to Houston. The day began at the Houston Museum of Natural Science where students toured permanent exhibits including King Tut’s Tomb: The Discovery Experience. The group then watched “Mummies 2D: Secrets of the Pharaohs” followed by “Passport to the Universe” in the planetarium. After lunch, the group traveled to the Holocaust Museum where students had a guided tour in the afternoon. They viewed exhibits and pictures while their guide led them through the time of the Holocaust and helped them understand the events of that dark time in the history of the world. Prior to this field trip, the 8th grade students at St. Rose were visited by John and Suzy Landa from Houston who shared the story of Suzy’s mother, Trudy Weil Smith, who was a Holocaust survivor. Students were excited to find the brick with Ms. Trudy’s name on it in the Memorial Room of the museum that day. Mr. Landa had also shared a quote with the students from Sir Edmund Burke which stated, ”The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” The students also saw this quote posted at the Holocaust Museum and were reminded at the end of the tour to be upstanders rather than just bystanders when something bad is happening. Students enjoyed the field trip and returned with information and knowledge challenging them to be the best people they can be.
