St. Rose Sixth Grade Visits Czech Center

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the sixth grade class at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School traveled to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. They are pictured with Mr. Hermes, Mrs. Noska, and Mrs. Hrncir dressed in kroje. The day was filled with delicious food including homemade kolaches, Czech-style chicken noodle soup and sandwiches, and many learning activities. Educational explanations and translations of Czech traditions and language kicked off the day. Then they toured the TCHCC main building, museum, and library. Outside they walked to view the Wallachian Belfry and Czech Music Museum of Texas. After a delicious lunch, they went on a walking tour of the Czech Village. There they viewed many restored buildings and houses including the SPJST Lodge #19, Migl House, and Salas House. They toured the Czech Newspaper Museum and saw the working 1908 engine and press. The Janak Barn was next on the tour with corn shelling and grinding hands-on demonstrations. The day ended with seeing the hay press and Zapalac Saw Mill which included the running of the 1895 DeLoach Mill and planer. With October being Czech Heritage Month, there’s no other place they’d rather have gone.
