Smith-McMillan DAR Chapter Awards Local Scholarships
The local Smith-McMillan Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, have awarded $3,500 in scholarships to three area 2024 high school graduates.
The winner of the Shirley K. Pyburn Memorial Scholarship of $1500 is Cooper Keller Mau from Fayetteville High School. He plans to attend Texas Tech University and study Animal Science and Agricultural Economics with a minor in Chemistry. Cooper writes: “As an undergraduate, I am looking forward to working on research and exploring different sectors, such as finance, agriculture, or law. Ultimately, I plan to own and operate my own cattle ranch and work my way into public office to positively impact our state and national legislature.” He is the son of John and Karolyn Mau of Columbus.
The chapter also awards two $1,000 Smith-McMillan Chapter NSDAR Scholarships. The winners of those scholarships are Jill Newton and Landon von Minden.
Jill Elizabeth Newton from La Grange High School plans to attend Texas A & M University in College Station with a major in human resource development. Jill writes: “After graduating, I envision myself launching a career in Human Resources, potentially within a school district, hospital, corporation, or non-profit organization. This path allows me to empower individuals to discover purpose and satisfaction in both their professional and personal endeavors. Regardless of the specific environment, I am driven to find a role that leverages my leadership skills to positively impact the organization and its people.” She is the daughter of Mike and Kim Newton of La Grange.
Landon Dale von Minden from La Grange High School plans to attend the University of Texas in Austin and major in Business Honors and Finance at the McCombs School of Business. Landon writes: “I plan to either attend law school after or go into investment banking.” He is the son of Bradley and Misti von Minden of La Grange.
The scholarships are awarded using a points system that takes into consideration their academic prowess, leadership roles, and an original essay, as well as their school, community, and church activities.
