Seniors to Learn About Eating Healthy
Senior Connections will welcome Home Town Wellness with an important topic Monday, June 24 for the Lunch and Learn program. They will be speaking about how to eat healthier and how to make good food choices at the grocery store. It’s a challenge for many members who live alone, and especially those who don’t cook, so we look forward to their insight. We will follow the presentation with tai-chi, so plan to stay for some gentle exercise.
On Wednesday, June 26, Craig Pierson will stop by to introduce himself. He is offering his help to members who need assistance around the yard or home for light duty jobs.
Deanie Crim and her staff from Schulenburg Rehabilitation will come to call bingo on Wednesday. While playing bingo, seniors can quietly socialize and share a few laughs with other players. Laughter relaxes the muscles, which alleviates tension, relieves stress, and boosts the immune system. When seniors are playing bingo and conversing with others, their brains become distracted and don’t recognize pain symptoms. Competing for the big prize can be exhilarating too.
The art class on Friday from 10 a.m. - noon will in-clude simple water color projects or a second project to be decided. Arts and crafts including painting, bead work, pottery, and a variety of other projects, offers seniors a creative outlet, promoting mental well-being, and fostering selfexpression. Research suggests that participating in creative activities, such as art and craft projects, has a positive impact on an individual’s well-being. Art can help seniors reclaim their sense of purpose, fostering self-acceptance and aiding in their overall personal growth. These projects help with dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Looking ahead to July, on July 2 we will begin sharing our programming in Weimar. The First United Methodist Church will host us in their fellowship hall each first and third Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Current members that live in the area are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.
Our home cooked, balanced and nutritious meals served at our center three days per week, ensure members access to balanced and healthy food options. These meals are enjoyed in a communal setting, promoting social interaction and reducing the burden of meal preparation. At Senior Connections we provide a supportive environment where our senior members aged 55 and up can connect with others, form new friendships, and engage in social activities. We are very excited to expand into our neighboring communities of Weimar and Flatonia this summer.
