Senior Connections invites you to join us for coffee, conversation and games on Monday the July 29. Our meal will have a Mexican flare. Tamales donated by Carolyn Moore will be paired with enchiladas, Spanish rice and black beans and corn salad by Senior Connections. Dessert will be donated by Carolyn Moore. Following our meal, the Lunch and Learn speaker will be Braden Kulhanic and Hometown Wellness. He will be sharing valuable health related information with the members. Following the program there will be bingo.

Wednesday, July 31 at the Center in Schulenburg, parking will be a challenge. The covered area where many members park will be off limits due to preparation for the Festival. You will have to park in the lot instead. The. Boys and Girls Club summer programs will be over however, so more parking will be available in front of our building. We won’t let that get in the way of bingo. Come early for coffee and games. Our lunch prepared by Senior Connections will include baked ziti, mixed veggies and salad. With a dessert brought by Darlene Williams. Bill Wagner is our vip caller.

Membership for Senior Connections is free, and there is no charge for the meals. We do have a “black box” by our sign in sheet for those who wish to make a free will donation for their meals.

The Schulenburg Festival will kick off on Thursday Aug. 1 in Wolters Park, so we will have a short week to wind down the month. The center will be closed on Friday.

Our August art instructor artist will be Claire Lewis from Columbus. She will continue on her theme of embroidery and slow stitching. This is a technique where a fabric collage is made with stitching repurposed fabric making this a sustainable art form. The embellishing is where you can harness the calming repetition of hand stitch rhythms. Claire was inspired by Bobbie Shapiro of Eagle Lake who is an amazing textile artist. Bobbie will join Claire for her first class on Aug. 9 and Bobbie will join us to do a presentation of her works.

Our art classes are open to any senior 55 and up and take place at the center for the summer months in Schulenburg on Fridays from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. with a light lunch after class. You don’t have to be a member to join in on the fun. We always have a secondary project available for those not able to do the guest artist’s project. We can not thank Arts For Rural Texas enough for making these classes possible. We will move back into their space on Lyons Ave at the end of August.

One of the perks for being a member is being able to get some help around your home from our own hero Craig Pierson and his growing crew. So, we are shouting out our praises to him and his wife April Pierson, Carl Penland and Jimmy Hageman who have been helping out at our members homes cleaning out gutters, trimming trees, changing light bulbs, installing water heaters and all sorts of small projects the elders can’t or should not handle themselves. They really are our hero’s and our angels. We are so lucky to have them. So if you’re a member in need of some help, we have a sign-up sheet at the center for you to add your name to the list. Craig will give you a call and get you on their schedule. He will also let you know if the job is to much for them to handle, or they lack tools or equipment to do it. We also received a wonderful gift recently from Weimar United Church. They collected their 1-1 offering for us in June and we received a wonderful check of $310, to be used in our new Weimar campus.

One more shout out to Eric Loyd, son of Marlene Renison. They brought us a Bluetooth microphone. It is a challenge to speak loud enough for all to hear during our announcements, speakers and bingo calling. We now have a wonderful tool, easy to use and hands free so we can communicate better.

All of these wonderful acts of kindness add to the positive energy flowing through the center. With our expansions into Weimar and Flatonia, donations of any kind really make a difference. Flatonia will need card games, dominoes, bingo prizes and a variety of other necessities. We have a wish list on Amazon if you would like to donate that way. You can find a link on our website.

We keep track of every in-kind donation, and it adds up. Senior Connections does not receive government funds. The center is a communitybased nonprofit relying on grants, fundraisers and donations from the community to make our programs possible. As you can see, we are dedicated to serving the elderly in Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca counties. Established in 2015 and growing strong.
