Senior Connections Looks Forward to A Busy May

Here at Senior Connections in Schulenburg we look forward to many things in the month of May.

Heather Barthelme with Fayette County Community Theater will be stopping by for our Lunch and Learn on Monday, May 6, after a delicious meal of grilled chicken and scalloped potatoes from Koopmann Catering. We look forward to hearing about the recent performance of Clue they shared with the community. Upcoming plays will be also on her topic list.

Move it Monday continues at the center with line dancing with Julian Godsey. We are also introducing tai-chi to the group in short 5-10-minute sequences. This is a peaceful and gentle series of movements that gets your energy moving through out your body. Come try it. No need to be a member, come have lunch and stay for the fun.

Wednesday, May 8, we welcome Regency Integrated Health services from Halletsville to call our bingo game after a mouth watering meal of beef and chicken fajitas also from the amazing Koopmann Catering. This is always a fun and competitive game played to win all sorts of prizes.

Claire Lewis will be our guest artist and instructor for our Artful Fridays at Arts for Rural Texas on Lyons Ave. held Fridays for the month of May from 10 a.m.-noon. She will share her new passion of Fiber Arts with stitching and beading embellishments. She is an extremely talented artist, and she asks that you come create gifts, freshen an old favorite blouse, enhance printed fabric with embroidery stitching and beading. The crewel stitching we will be using uses larger needles and much easier to do than regular embroidery. It’s so much fun!

For those with out the dexterity to enjoy her lessons in our seconded classroom Art with Heart will meet to create simple yet beautiful projects to give to shut ins and to sell to raise funds for our organization at local festivals. At these events we will create awareness of Senior Connections and our wonderful members enticing people to join us. We need your help with creating items and helping with the events. Contact Stephanie Shroyer the Program Director at (979) 7433227 if your interested in lending a hand. Please join us for either of these opportunities. A light lunch is served atArts following class.

Paradigm at the Oak nursing facility will be our first place for us to adopt and collect items they are in need of. If you have women’s and men’s clothing and shoes, board games, and magazines laying around gathering dust, brush them off and bring them to the center by May 13 when Pam Noell, the director of Paradigm, will be our lunch and Learn speaker. Let’s surprise her with some love in the way of these muchneeded donations. We are also creating cards and decorations for the residents. Look for the color sheets to help us make suncatchers brighten their day by the magazine rack at the center.

Excitement builds for our up coming trip to Columbus Magnolia Festival which will offer something for everyone. On May 18 we will have the opportunity to enjoy vintage cars, local artisans, historic architecture, and a visit to Hound Song Brewery for a light meal, cool air and maybe dominoes. Sign up for the fun outing at the center, transportation will be available to those in need.

On May 1 we celebrated the retirement of Cindy Villarreal as the members and community came by to wish her well. After a special meal of chicken tenders from Edna’s café we celebrated with cake, cookies and a festive beverage. We will miss Cindy and are so grateful for all she has done for the organization. She has been instrumental in growing partnerships with so many organizations and citizens. We hope that she will continue to join us when ever she can.

Last month our baking group baked bread, lemon cake and snickerdoodle cookies. Thank you, Kathy Carpenter, for your baking skills. These delicious morsels were given to St Rose school staff and Library. We thank them for sharing their children’s choir visiting us during the holidays and sharing their music.

If you would like to join in on the baking, we would love to have you. The group meets on Toss Up Tuesday that happens once a month. Mark your calendar for May 21 from 9 a.m.-noon with a light lunch after.

We could not provide the services, scrumptious meals and fun programs without the help of our amazing volunteers. These people give their time to help us care for our members with such love and grace. We want to shout out to each and every one who helps our world go round here at Senior Connections. Thank you to Kathy Carpenter, Sharon Rodriguez, Darlene Williams, Cynthia Trojacek and Judy Hageman for their time they give to us.

We would love for you to join our volunteer team. If you have a few hours a week you would like to fill with a gratifying time serving our members, contact Stephanie Shroyer at (979) 702-1246. Or better yet, drop in on a Monday or a Wednesday and see for yourself the wonderful community.
