Schulenburg American Legion Moves Two Civil War Veterans’ Headstones
In a previous article in The Fayette County Record dated Feb. 3, Schulenburg American Legion Post 143 explained how they, with the financial help of the local community, moved Captain Milton Frazer’s Civil War headstone from Navidad Baptist Cemetery in Fayette County to its correct location in Kentucky.
After realizing that error in headstone placement, Navidad Baptist Cemetery did a thorough review of the veterans buried in their cemetery and discovered that there were two more veteran headstones that were not in their proper location. Luckily, their correct location are in local cemeteries.
The first is that of 1st Lieutenant Oliver Searcy who served with Company D, 27th Texas Calvary. He is actually buried in the Hallettsville City Cemetery. The 27th Cavalry fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Siege of Corinth, Battle of Luka, Battle of Corinth, Holly Springs Raid, Battle of Thompson’s Station, Battle of Yazoo City, Atlanta Campaign, Battle of Franklin, and the Third Battle of Murfreesboro.
The second is that of Private Isaac Morrow who served with Lyons Mounted Rifleman, a local Confederate militia, who were known to drill at the Anderson House in Schulenburg. He is actually buried at Andrews Chapel Cemetery in Hackberry.
As with Captain Frazer, Navidad Baptist Cemetery contacted American Legion Post 143 for their assistance in relocating these veterans’ headstones to their correct location. A meeting was set up with the Andrews Chapel Cemetery Association, a representative of the Hallettsville City Cemetery and a member of the Texas Historical Commission to discuss the move and headstone placement.
And on Oct. 25, both Veterans were relocated with military honors. Relatives of 1st Lieutenant Searcy could not be located, but a relative of Private Isaac Marrow was found and was in attendance for the ceremony.
Schulenburg American Legion Post 143 was honored to assist in this endeavor which is in keeping with one of our association’s values – Honoring those veterans who came before us and ensuring they are never forgotten.
