Schilling Bit by a Copperhead
It’s snake season, so heads up about what could potentially happen to anyone fussing around those garden beds. “I just want to warn everyone so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” stated Jeanne Schilling. “My husband Rick was simply reaching out to clear out some garden beds about 15 ft. from our front door and he felt a sharp bite. He lifted up his finger and a small snake was attached to the end of it.
“He shook it off, came in the house and announced he was bit by a copperhead. That snake had to be killed so I immediately called my son. He got here and they went out and killed it. Then we headed for the emergency room in Columbus and were directed to ICU at HCAHouston ER 24/7 in Spring,” explained Jeanne.
“You have to take a photo of the snake. They won’t just administer antivemon (if applicable to your case) if you go in there and announce you were bit by a copperhead. Rick was given antivenom, which requires a stay in the ICU. He was there for two days. The venom is very dangerous and the bite is extremely painful. A series of skin grafts will need to be administered and there’s a slight chance the finger may need to be amputated.”
Snakes sense body warmth and think it’s their next potential meal. Before you start working in the garden this time of year, consider shaking things up with a big stick before digging in.
