Retired Teachers Attend District 13 Fall Conference
The District 13 Retired Teachers’ Association Fall Conference was held on Sept. 21, at the San Marcos Activity Center in San Marcos, with 83 in attendance, including three from Fayette County. Fourteen units of retired teachers comprise District 13; all units were present.
A theme video from the movie, “Chariots of Fire” was shown, and Marcy Cann, TRTA State President spoke. A collection was taken to benefit the Texas Retired Teachers’ Foundation. The Foundation provides financial help to retired teachers in need, provides scholarships for first year teachers, and gives grants to active teachers.
A slide presentation was given, to honor those members who have passed away this year, followed by a moment of silence to remember them. Mollye Long, District Chair for Legislation, gave tips on what all they can do to promote getting a permanent COLA (cost of living adjustment) The Business Meeting included the following: Report from the nominating committee, and the election of District Officers for 2024-2026, which are as follows: President-Joe Ramirez; 1st Vice-President Melanie Mica; 2nd Vice-President Alice Castillo; Secretary Shelly McNulty; Treasurer Michial Meyer. The EL Galyean Award nomination was made by Sue Duncan for Larry Yawn. Budgets for 20222023 and for 2024-2026 were presented and adopted.
Upcoming dates to remember: the next regularly- held meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 13, with a silent auction to benefit the TRTA Foundation. District and State: TRTA Convention is April 15-17, 2024, Corpus Christi; Spring District Conference is May 9, 2024, San Marcos.
