Record Recently Travels in Europe

The Fayette Country Record traveled throughout England recently with Elizabeth and John Binning of West Point. Elizabeth was invited to present at the European Union’s Business Network Technology Conference in Coventry, England. The Binnings also visited the London location of the Embassy of the Republic of Texas. President Sam Houston sent Dr. Ashbel Smith, the Secretary of State, to be the Texan diplomatic representative in England. Located in an alleyway off 4 St. James Street in London, there is a plaque that reads, “Texas Legation in this building was the legation for the ministers from the Republic of Texas to the Court of St. James 1842-1845.” In the courtyard down the alley there is a stone relief of Sam Houston. They subsequently visited Stratford Upon Avon, Oxford, Bath, Stonehenge, Brighton, Highclere Castle (the real Downton Abbey), and London among their travels.
