Opry to Feature Rocky King Band Monday
The Fayette County Country Music Club will host their monthly Opry on Monday, June 20 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Grange. The show starts at 7 p.m. and the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $7.
This month the Opry will feature Pat Varley, Wayne Brown, and Rocky King.
Pat Varley began singing at oprys in 1989. She has travelled to and performed at some of the best Oprys in Texas. Pat was instrumental in the formation of the Hometown Opry in Pasadena. Pat and her husband Jerry ran a show in Louisiana for 2 ½ years before moving back to Pasadena, which has been home for many years. She loves the audience and she loves to sing.
Wayne Brown began singing at Alvin Opry in 1992. He has sung at more than 40 shows across Texas. He lives in Manvel, just south of Houston. Wayne loves making folks laugh with his novelty songs, stories and poetry. He loves singing old songs that the audience remembers.
Wayne and Pat met backstage at the Alvin Opry in 1995. They began singing duets, and were founding members of a quartet called Sterling in 1999. Pat sang with the group until she and Jerry moved to Louisiana in 2002.
Wayne and Pat have maintained friendship, and recently reconnected to sing together. June 20 will be their first public performance. Their voices complement each other very nicely, and they enjoy performing together.
At an early age Rocky King was exposed to the music of the legendary Hoyle Nix and his West Texas Cowboys. His parents took him to dances where his love for the fiddle and country and western swing music was born. On his fifth birthday his parents bought him a fiddle and took him to Jody Nix for his first lessons, where the “fire” was lit that still drives him today. In his teenage years he realized he wanted to be a serious fiddle player.
He received several scholarships to South Plains College including the Tiny Moore Memorial Scholarship. During his college years he took lessons from Ricky Boen and Ricky Turpin. Rocky has had the honor of playing with several bands in the past ten years that play the music he loves including some of his heroes.
He is appreciative of the people who have allowed him to play and further his knowledge of real country music and western swing. Rock currently has assembled some great musicians to form the Rocky King Band.
