Look Back at Movie Shot Here For a short time back in 2013, our small town was filled with zombie-like creatures and Texas Rangers riding full blazes on horseback shooting at indians across the plains. They hung out from midnight till dawn in the small cemetery off Wecheta Rd. and the spirit of an old indian chief served drinks behind Joe’s bar. It was all a temporary set up for a film made here entitled Dawn of the Crescent Moon.

“My brother Kevin Coleman, in partnership with Kirk Loudon, wanted to make a low budget film. Kevin wrote the screenplay, and I was the executive producer,” said resident Scott Coleman. “A lot of it was filmed on my property. My role was essentially ‘greasing the skids’ for access to locations. Andy Anderson, a Waco weatherman, played the main Texas Ranger and about 30 dedicated locals joined in. Filming began 30 minutes after sundown and went until 30 minutes before sunup. We were as much zombies as anyone. My niece tucked her hair up in her hat and played one of the Texas Rangers. She also plays one of the biggest parts—the goth spirit channeling chick. She’s now a stunt professional in Hollywood.”

Some of the movie was set back in the 1830’s. The premise of the horror/suspense film was that anyone who had ever gone after this treasure buried in the lake (the lake behind the Coleman’s home serving as one of the backdrops) by native American Indians back then had met their demise by the Rangers. They became the cursed dead souls who would capture intervining treasure hunters and drag them down to the bottom of the lake. Barry Corbin played the bartender at Joe’s. He was the spirit of the old chief and came back to the future to talk any gold diggers from going after the treasure.

“The movie won awards. It was an excellent first experience production. We sold the rights to a distribution company. I haven’t made a movie since,” said Scott. “Everyone in Fayetteville was great, from the street locals all the way to the mayor’s office. The opening was at the Red & White Gallery and all of us had a great time.” Check out the film to discover the reason behind the title. You can order Dawn of the Crescent Moon on Amazon.
