Nearly 120 Kids Participating in Camp Invention at LGISD
Camp Invention, a longrunning STEM day camp, made a return for its 11th year in La Grange. Nearly 120 kids from all over the area were in attendance, with even more on a waiting list. This year was the second year in which Camp Invention was at the new elementary school building. In years past, the camp has been at various locations across the La Grange ISD campus, making its start in what was the fourth grade building and is now the technology and student services building.
“It’s funny to hear the kids say ‘What am I doing at school in the summer?’ but they crack up and laugh about it.,” said Kristi Piestch, one of the codirectors. “And it’s nice for us teachers, because we’re familiar with this campus, so if we need something, we just go up to our classroom and get it.”
This year’s theme was ‘Explore.’ The campers rotated through several modules each day, learning what it means to be curious, and where exploration can lead them to. From space to the sea, to even their own homes, the campers learned that discovery can happen anywhere. In each of these modules, they enhanced their creativity, knowledge, and problem solving skills while having fun with their peers.
“I’ve really tried to pick and choose games that allow them to be creative and explore the different types of leadership in their group, or being in different types of environments, so it allows them to think and create on their own, rather than me just telling them the rules without there being much leeway,” shared Anna Hasher, the teacher of the Camp Invention Games module.
Although entering a new decade of invention in a new environment, Camp Invention still holds true to the original purpose of its creation: giving kids the tools they need in order to step out into a world that’s theirs to discover.
