Valley Community Center Hears from The Herb Cottage Owner

The Monday Lunch and Learn Speaker, Cindy Meredith, owner of The Herb Cottage, addressed members’ needs regarding the recent worm encounters. That was the first topic of discussion members had for her because they were just fed up with the worms.

Members wanted to know what they could do to get rid of them, and the first thing Cindy Meredith told them was to get real. These worms and their life cycles have been in the area for generations going back to the days of the Karankawa Indians and even before then. She explained their life cycles and that just as suddenly as they appeared, they will go into their next stage of life, which is the cocoon stage.

If you can be patient and not try to annihilate them all, they will be gone out of lives, until next year.

For those not patient enough, she recommended a trip to the CO-OP or MG for a treatment. Ask the store employee for anything that has BT in it, Cindy recommended. There are many brands out there, but just ask for BT, which the worms ingest then it affects them and they are not your problem anymore. The ladies were writing it down and had intentions to let others know as well. Meredith also told members about using row covers early in the season to prevent any type of infestation to can be that pro-active.

The members have remarked lately that the speakers for the Monday Lunch & Learn Series have been very relevant to their needs and they have learned a lot. They ask us to continue the quality of the speakers because they have been interesting and informative.

Upcoming speakers in May include David Ramjohn, from AlgaEternal and Deanna Langhammer from Leon’s Electric & Plumbing. NVCC will have a Zoom meeting with a representative on an Independence Chair appliance for folks to look at regarding mobility, independence at home, and being able to do more at home in a safer manner. Then we’ll continue with the “Dealing with Grief ” sessions with Cindy Fanning from Hospice Brazos Valley, which members have expressed as be-ing helpful to them.

Anyone is welcome to come in and enjoy the information provided by these community leaders and speakers. Feel free to come in on a Monday, between 11:30 a.m. and noon so you can share lunch with us and get to hear an awesome speaker. Give the center a call if you or your company would like to be spotlighted so members can learn about you and what you do in our community. Call (979) 743-3227 and let Cindy Villarreal know that you would like to be a Lunch and Learn speaker and she will get you signed in.

NVCC is still in need of volunteers at the senior center and we would love to have you come in and work with us, especially if you are good at event planning, volunteer management, or can help out with day-to-day operations. Call at (979) 743-3227 to get involved. Community service is usually a requirement on college or employment applications and NVCC can help you with this. Call to discuss details.

The center members have plans to go to the Whistling Duck Winery in Weimar on May 12for an educational experience and a light lunch, with an option of a wine tasting, if you choose. The cost of lunch and a flight of wine is $30 for each member, and the Center is providing transportation by Schuber for 14 members. A sign-up sheet will be available next week, so let us know if you are interested.
