A blood drive will take place Sunday, Aug. 28 from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Martin Luther Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall. It is being held in conjunction with Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Round Top. You can make an appointment by contacting Khardin@giveblood.org or logging into your established Digital Donor Account.

RT-C School News Round Top-Carmine High School JV and varsity volleyball teams host North Zulch on Aug. 16 at 5 p.m. Varsity participates in the Schulenburg Tournament Aug. 18-20. Teachers will have a work day on Aug. 16. If students have not picked up their class schedules yet, they may do so on Aug. 16 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The first day of classes for the 2022-2023 school year will be Aug. 17.

Carmine VFD Carmine Volunteer Fire Department’s regular meeting is Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. The burn ban continues to be in effect for Fayette County. Let’s pray for rain.

A Little More History A piece of Carmine History about dry goods and specialty stores. Part 3. Charlie (Popcorn) Werchan had a saloon and later dry goods store at the current address of 107 Thigpen. H & K Store then opened there and Leila Harzke sold dry goods, Simplicity patterns, fabric, and sewing items. Then the building was sold to Pootsie Whitehall for antique sales. Later, antiques were sold by Margie Buscha and Janice Teinert. Texas Trash & Treasures, owned by Richard and Linda Hamilton, sold re-purposed metal art at 107 Thigpen St. in the 2000s until about 2013. It is now McCaul Style, which opened in 2014 and is owned by Paige Hough and her mother, Vicki Hough. They sell antiques, collectibles, and home décor.

Some stores sold four yard pieces of bundled fabric from the Comal Cotton Mill.

Ella Noak sold artificial flowers from a store next to her home along Centennial Street in the 1970s.

In the early 1980s,Vera Mohr had Country Needlecrafts in the tall store at 125 Augsburg. She sold fabric and sewing supplies and then moved to Brenham in the mid 1980s. Bob and Karen Springer purchased the property in 1992 and antiques are now sold there.

Neese’s Antiques opened in the late 1980s when W.J. Neese discontinued business as a pharmacy. After his death, it was the business of Lucile Neese and later of her estate. It closed in 2021. Edrol Wagner crafted and sold pierced tin décor in the 1990s. He & Marilyn bought the building from Raymond and Bernice Steinbach which was on the west side of Haupstrasse south. Falba’s Antiques, owned by Falba Schoenberg in the mid 1990s, was located at the east corner of Sylvan and Hauptstrasse.

Eloise Norton owned antique shops at various locations. Jayne’s Antiques, operated by Jayne Knox, was in the Hoppe Store Building (108 Thigpen) in the mid 2010s. Heritage Haus Gifts was owned by Betty and Lyndon Sommer in the early 2000s, where the Village Market is.

Hill Country Collectibles at 115 Thigpen, a gift shop, was owned by Joyce Schiwart. It closed in the mid 2010s. Trendy Chicks Boutique, which was owned by Mike & Linda Crosby and children Courtney, Molly, Jenny, Mike, Jr., and Marc opened in 2011 at 714 W. US Hwy 290. They sold jewelry, clothing, art deco wall hangings, and unusual items. They were open for several years.

Yellow Barn Antique Mall is at 108 W. Thigpen. Deanna Mesecke owns Unique Antiques at 138 Sylvan St. To the west along Sylvan St., Oak Hill Trading Company is owned by William Holcomb, which opened in December, 2018. He has antiques in the former Saradepity Shop (2015-- 2018) and Standish Grain Antiques (2017-2018).

Carmine Antiques at 106 E. Sylvan is owned by Dewain Belgard and Danny Smith. They have antiques and vintage items.

Carmine Trading Post is owned by Art Weis & Veronica Garcia at 248 Centennial St.

The Village Market also sells some dry goods and gifts.

MLLC News RT-C Appreciation Breakfast is August 16 at 8:30 a.m. Church Council meets Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Saturday worship with Holy Communion is at 6 p.m. Sunday School is Sunday at

9 a.m. Worship with Holy Communion observing the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost is at 10 a.m. It is Lutherhill Sunday with Matt Kindsvatter delivering the sermon. A quilt will be given to him for the Lutherhill Gala. There will be the blessing of students and backpacks. The service will also be on the mllccarmine. com website. The Rev. David Tinker is the pastor. Men in Mission meet Monday at 6 p.m.

Recycling Trailer The recycling trailer is at the Carmine Hall on Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m. Attendants are available to help unload dry newspapers, telephone books, magazines, cardboard, paper, junk mail, clean no. 1 and no 2 food grade plastics (milk cartons should be separated from other plastic), all colors glass, steel food cans, and aluminum cans. The trailer is in Ledbetter from 8:30-11 a.m., also on Thursdays, behind the Ledbetter Fireman’s Hall.

Visitors’ Center Carmine Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center at the restored Train Depot is open on the second and fourth Fridays and Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
