A Blood Drive will be held Sunday, June 25 from 9:30 until 2 p.m. at the Martin Luther Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in conjunction with Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Round Top. It will be conducted by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. You can make an appointment by contacting Khardin@giveblood. org or by logging into your established Digital Donor Account. Strength & conditioning and summer skill work are both free and held Mondays through Fridays, June 5-July 14, for incoming seventh through twelfth graders. The first one is 8-9 a.m. and the second 9-10 a.m. Registration is not needed for these two. They will be off July 3-7.

The deadline for registration for the following camps is July 10 to receive a T-Shirt and cost is $60. Basketball Camp is July 17-19 for incoming first through twelfth grades. Volleyball Camp is July 26-28 for first through twelfth grades and Baseball Camp is July 27-29 for incoming second through eighth grades.Check the website for time schedules and more information.

RT-C ISD is on summer break. Classes begin for the 2023-2024 school year on Aug. 16.

The administrative offices will be open May 28 through August 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Salad Supper The Martin Luther Lutheran Church Women of the ELCA Salad Supper and Program is June 7 in the Fellowship Hall. The theme is “Butterflies.” Ladies of the extended area and children are invited to attend the event which begins at 6:30 p.m. The meal is a salad potluck.

Online Bill Pay

The City of Carmine is now offering Online Bill Pay. This new customer portal allows customers to easily manage their utility account, monitor usage, view bill, receive text/email alerts, and enroll in auto pay.

Please email carmine@cityofcarmine.com with updated cell phone, and email address to be included in the new alert system.

Visit http://cityofcarmine. com/ and click on the tab “Online Bill Pay” to access the new portal.

Customers wishing to have the convenience of paying and viewing billing information online, will need to create an account. Please be sure to have your account number.

You may also pay your bill 24/7 by calling (888) 5793829 (toll free number to pay over the phone.) Have your account number handy and follow the prompts.

Carmine Heritage Committee The Carmine Heritage Committee will not meet on June 7. The next quarterly meeting will be September 6 in the museum at 10 a.m.

Condolences

Sympathy is extended to the family of Billie (B.B.) Connor who passed away on May 15. She was a retired educator and teacher. B.B enjoyed selling crafts at the Round Top events, square dancing, and traveling. She was an accomplished pianist. Her funeral service was held at First Baptist Church in Brenham, with burial in the Carmine Cemetery.

Bingo for Seniors

Bingo for Seniors (60 and older plus guests) will be held Sunday, June 18 from 2-4 p.m. at the Ledbetter Community Center. It is on the third Sunday this month due to the Ledbetter Homecoming on the second Sunday. Cost is $5 per card, which covers 10 plus games and prizes. Chips, snacks, and drinks are available for a freewill donation. This is a non-profit community event for entertainment.

A Piece of Carmine History A Piece of Carmine History- services offered-Part 5: various businesses

A livery stable, where horses are kept, was located in Carmine in about 1903, twenty years after the founding of the town.

The first bakery was opened in 1915-1916. Weikel’s Bakery started serving baked goods in the Village Market in the 2010’s and continues to do so along Sylvan St.

During World War II, the citizens of Carmine offered a willing hand and were active with Red Cross Activity.

A shoe repair shop was in town in the early 1940’s, located on the east side of Hauptstrasse between Sylvan St. and Augsburg Ave.

Bea and Felix Werchan owned a Dry Cleaning shop from the 1940s to about the 1970s on the west side of Hauptstrasse between Sylvan St. and Augsburg Ave. Alterations were also done in the shop. Billy Etzel worked there while he was in high school.

There were several seamstresses in Carmine through the years.

Bernice Steinbach had her sewing room in the Carmine Radio & TV Shop, which was owned by her and her husband Raymond. It was next to the dry cleaners. She did custom sewing and alterations during the 1940s until the 2000s.

Vernell Noak sewed and did alterations for people in the neighborhood from the 1960s to the early 1980s.

Vera Mohr sewed custom draperies in the early to mid-1980s, at Country Needlecrafts located at 125 Augsburg Ave.

Darlene Etzel opened Darlene’s Custom Sewing in 1986. She opened a new building in 1996 at 123 Thigpen St. She did all kinds of sewing, alterations, and window coverings, and has now cut back to sewing slip covers.

Alternator and starter repairs were done by Louis Kartous from 1998-2017 located at 445 N Hauptstrasse St. He also repaired mantle clocks and pocket watches from 2010 until 2017.

Catering for larger gatherings was provided by Charles and Charlene Mueller from the early 1980s until early 2000. It was known as C & C Catering.

Gary Goebel started Goebel Catering in 2010. He continues to serve meals for special occasions and gatherings.

Ladies decorate for WELCA salad supper at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

WELCA Salad Supper is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Rebekah Group meets Thursday at 2 p.m.

Saturday worship with Holy Communion is at 6 p.m.

Sunday School is Sunday at 9 a.m.

Sunday worship with Holy Communion, observing the Second Sunday after Pentecost is at 10 a.m. Praise Team leads the songs and the Noisy Offering will be received for AMEN Food Pantry in La Grange. The Rev. David Tinker is the pastor.

Quilting for Lutheran World Relief is Monday at 9 a.m.

Meals on Wheels Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels with Combined Community Action meet every Wednesday at Martin Luther Lutheran Church Mission and Ministry Building located at 250 Augsburg Ave., Carmine, TX 78932.

Come early to play dominoes and enjoy the camaraderie. Hours are 9 – 11:30 a.m.

Food usually arrives about 10 a.m. and is for pick-up only until 11:30 a.m. There are five meals in a box along with milk, dessert, and bread. Cost is a donation of $10, which makes it $2 per meal. It is for seniors age 60 and up.

The recycling trailer is at the Carmine Hall on Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m.

The trailer is in Ledbetter from 8:30-11 a.m., also on Thursdays, behind the Ledbetter Fireman’s Hall.
