Local Metal Band ‘Familiar With Failure’ Spreads Important Message

Familiar with Failure is a band with a mission. Established in 2017, the band was just a couple of friends experimenting with music. Now, Familiar with Failure has evolved into a band spreading an important message of mental health and communicating your struggles.

Band members include: Joshua Arnold - Vocals, Kolby Karstedt - Bassist, Vocals, Kyle Wolff - Guitar, Caleb Chowdory - Drums.

Chowdery, the band’s drummer, said “We would rather talk to you than attend your funeral,” an important message spread across several of their songs. According to the band’s guitarist, Kyle, their unique name comes from a lyric from a song called “Indecision” by Ghost Key, a band that inspires a lot of their music.

Familiar with Failure began its ascent after their second gig opening for a band called Silent Planet. After playing their first song on their set and getting asked for an autograph, the band realised they could continue spreading their message and helping other people feel understood.

What makes Familiar With Failure so unique is their genre of music. With influences like Metallica, their lyrics and mission statement aren’t exactly common among the heavy metal scene. But according to Caleb, he along with his bandmates wanted to go deeper into mental health, experiencing loss, and struggles growing up. They’ve succeeded in doing so, opening for bands like Convictions, Silent Planet, Distinguisher, Church Tongue, Set to Stun, Homewrecker, Great American Ghost, and Venom Prison.

They released their first EP in 2018, “The Fault Was Mine” and their debut LP “Inevitable” in 2021.

With music constantly in the works and more shows being planned, Familiar With Failure plans on continuing to spread their message of hope.
