Local Grandson Achieves Scouting’s Highest Honor
Nicholas Garner, son of Bobby and Donna (Peck) Garner of Katy, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in scouting. He is the grandson of Don and Kay Peck of Huntsville, formerly of La Grange, and Terry and Glenda Garner of Troy, North Carolina.
A member of Troop 925, Nick is one of only approximately 6 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle Scout rank. To earn this honor, each candidate must complete 21 merit badges and successfully carry out a community, church, or synagogue-related service project. For his Eagle project, Nick designed and completed a landscaping project at an inpatient skilled nursing facility in Richmond. Along with a group of scouts from Troop 925, he built two wheelchair-accessible raised garden planters. One was planted with vegetables and the other with flowers for residents to enjoy and incorporate into their rehabilitation therapies. The group also replaced the flower bed borders.
Nick is a senior at Katy High School and will soon graduate with honors. He plays the flute and has been an active member of That Roarin’ Band from Tigerland throughout his high school years. He is also a member of the KHS Wind Ensemble and the National Honor Society. He was recently named a Texas Music Educators Association Music Scholar. The Texas Music Scholar Award designates students in high school music programs who exemplify attributes of meritorious performance in the areas of scholarship, musicianship, and citizenship.
Nick plans to attend Oklahoma State University, where he will major in chemical and biomedical engineering. He will continue his musical pursuits by playing flute in the university’s marching band as well as one of its concert bands. He also received a full nonresident tuition waiver for four years through the band program.
