LHS Band Already Hard at Work
Beginning July 8, the La Grange High School band began its summer training program.
Practices are Monday-Wednesday 1-4 p.m. for freshman camp, and beginning July 22, from 8-5 p.m., the Full Band will begin practice. According to Chris Cooper, the band director, the band program does summer training because, “our marching band gives their first performance before school even starts, so it’s important to start learning our material early.”
During practices the students participate in stretching and conditioning, marching techniques, dance techniques, instrumental masterclasses, and music rehearsal in both sectionals and in the full band. When asked what he’s excited for the new school year, Cooper said that “our players continue to improve, which means this band will sound better than ever. We as a staff have learned a lot about show design over the past couple of years, and we believe this year’s show will be by far the most entertaining one to date.”
He continues, “Generally speaking, this year’s seniors have been with us since freshman year, and our freshmen are the first class we started as beginners three years ago.”
When asked about what he’s noticed with this year’s incoming freshman, he replied that “Their attitude has been stellar. We’ve had outstanding attendance and work ethic from the freshman this week. We believe that they are going to help elevate the quality of our band this year.
“I would like to thank the community for the love and support they show our band and its students. I hope everyone will still attend this season’s home games, cheer on our football team and stick around for the halftime show, because I think it’s going to be their best production yet. We’re very excited to share it with everyone.”
