LG Student Deacon Wick Wins First ‘Play’s The Thing’ Award to Camp Shakespeare
Camp Shakespeare Director Robin Grace Soto visited La Grange last week to announce that Deacon Wick, local LGISD student, is the inaugural recipient of the University of Texas Camp Shakespeare “Play’s the Thing” Scholarship Award. The scholarship provides full financial assistance for a student to participate in Camp Shakespeare at Winedale, and is made possible with support from Dr. Craig Hurwitz and Kathy Blackbird, who are former Shakespeare at Winedale students of Jim (Doc) Ayres, the Camp Shakespeare Director of Mission. This scholarship honors the spirit of play and risk exhibited by past participants in the “Play’s the Thing” program (https://www.playsthething.org) which Hurwittz and Ayres directed at Dell’s Children’s Hospital in Austin. “We are honored to have Deacon carry this award. We are impressed with his spirit of play and willingness to take on challenges and also with the support he receives from his family,” said Soto. Deacon Wick will be exploring the role of Mercutio in Camp Shakespeare’s performance of “Romeo and Juliet” in July.
