Heritage Committee

The Heritage Committee of the Carmine Chamber of Commerce met Sept. 4 in the museum at the old train depot. The topic was “Then and Now” comparing the past and present.

Doing the laundry became much easier when wash boards were replaced by wringer washing machines. The first ones had a lever to push and pull before electricity. The clothes were hung outside on a clothes line. Then automatic washings machines changed the way clothes were washed, by just putting the clothes in a machine, adding detergent, and when the cycles were finished, place them in a dryer.

Each house in town had a water well and either a handpump or a bucket, which was used to lower in the well and bring up the water. Windmills were also used.

Headlights on cars and trucks were dimmed by using a switch which was on the floor. Starters were either on the dashboard or on the floor, next to the accelerator. The turn signal was your left hand: elbow turned and straight up to turn right and elbow straight out to turn left, with of course the window rolled down.

Doctors only had about two medicines to choose from to help an ailment. The last doctor in Carmine was Dr. A. C. Miller, who practiced into the early 1960s.

Community baseball players wore wool uniforms in the 1920s. The baseball field was just west of Carmine along Highway 290.

Travelers used printed road maps, compared to GPS today.

School children used Big Chief tablets. There were no chrome books or computers.

What comes to mind for you?

Water Restrictions

The mandatory water restrictions that are in effect for the City of Carmine continue until further notice. One of the water wells went down on Aug. 19, which forced the city to set strict water conservation measures while the repairs are being addressed.

Residents are only to water between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Odd numbered addresses may only water on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Even numbered addresses may water on Thursdays and Sundays.

Washing of vehicles is prohibited. Other ways to help are: turn off the faucet while brushing teeth; run washing machines only when full; and take shorter showers.
