Heritage Committee
The Heritage Committee of the Carmine Chamber of Commerce met Dec. 7.
Calvin Coufal gave a brief history of the banking industry. When he started working for Carmine State Bank in 1977, checks were mailed to the Federal Reserve in Houston. A courier picked up the checks from there, and delivered them by car to banks in the area. When received, they were put in alphabetical order and put in the Posting Machine. One person put them in the ledger and another on statement sheets. These needed to have the same total. The ledger was hand-written and the statements were typed.
Businesses supplied counter checks and there were no account numbers. People could scratch out the name of the bank on the check, and write in the bank’s name the person wanted.
Chris Coufal explained some of the modern technology now used. Checks are now imaged, sent to the Federal Reserve, and then sent to the bank from which it was written. At a store, they image the check, give it back to you, and the image is immediately sent to the bank. Everyone has an account number.
Statements may be viewed and transactions made online. Debit cards are issued.
