How To Support Your Local Volunteer Fire Departments

Did you know that all of the fire departments in Fayette County are volunteer? That’s right, Fayette County’s approximately 960 square miles are covered by Volunteer Firefighters. According to U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 70% of the fire departments in Texas are volunteer.

What does this mean to Fayette County and you?

• When you dial 911 for an emergency that needs the fire department, Firefighters have to leave jobs, family, meals, meeting, etc. to head to the emergency.

• In rural areas of the county, first responders may be working in the next town, requiring longer response times.

• Responding to emergencies is only one part of the time required of first responders. First Responders must complete training throughout the year and ensure that all of the apparatus and equipment are working . In addition to this, fundraising efforts take time as well.

• Without your support, our fire departments struggle.

As an individual, how can you support our volunteer fire departments?

• Volunteer - Different departments have different membership rules and roles, but I guarantee that they can use you in some capacity.

• Donate - Donate your time, give a financial gift, donate auction items, assist with fundraising efforts. If you are limited with these efforts, support them on social media. First responders love to know their efforts are appreciated.

As a family/friend of a First Responder.

• THANK YOU! There is no doubt, that you realize what it means for your First Responder to volunteer. Realize that their commitment to the community often times means they miss out on time with family and friends. Stress can take a large toll on First Responders and it can affect relationships. Support them and reach out to your fire department’s administration for assistance if needed.

As an employer, how can you support our volunteer fire departments?

• Realize that you volunteer first responder is a true treasure, giving their extra time away from work to the same community that supports your business. If you have an emergency either at your business or elsewhere, you are relying on other employers to give first responders the opportunity to leave their work to assist you.

• If possible, allow them to leave or come in late to work to respond to emergencies. If this is paid leave, even better.

• If possible, allow them to go to training without using paid time off. I know of volunteer firefighters that have taken their vacation time to attend a week of training. This is time that they could be going on a true vacation with their family; instead, they are dedicated to their community.

As a business in the community, how can you help?

• If possible, donate auction items. Fire departments want to support local businesses. Let’s support each other.

• Realize that meals at your restaurant may be interrupted, please be understanding.

• Shopping carts with food may have to be left in the aisle.

• Doctor or other appointments may have to be cancelled on a moment’s notice. Please realize that they are making a crucial decision and do not penalize them with fees, etc.
